The National Weather Service in Memphis predicts that “Old Man Winter” will be making an appearance Monday, February 13. A “wintry mix” of snow, sleet, and freezing rain is predicted for the afternoon until the evening hours. Traveling may become hazardous in the commute home from work and school. The Shelby County Office of Preparedness, under the direction of Bob Nations, Jr., urges motorists to take extra precautions on the roadways.
To arrive at your destination safely, follow these safety tips:
1. If you don’t have to travel, stay in!
2. Prepare your auto with a full tune up. Check antifreeze, oil, and tire pressure
3. Have an auto emergency kit to include: kitty litter or sand (for traction), NOAA weather radio with battery back-up, ALERT FM, gloves, coat, boots, scarf, mittens, shovel, HELP/OK sign, bottled water, non-perishable food, flashlight and batteries, metal whistle, ID, cellphone and charger, street maps, cash, flares
3. Make sure windshield and headlights are clean.
4. Give yourself extra time to reach your destination
5. Do not travel alone
6. Let someone know your intended route, time of departure, and estimated time of arrival
7. Travel only during daylight hours if possible
8. Keep your headlights on to improve your visibility to others on the road
9. Choose the roads most traveled such as interstates that will be treated with salt or brine
10. Be especially careful on bridges, overpasses, and shaded areas, which tend to freeze
11. Allow three vehicle lengths between you and the other motorists
12. Don’t use cruise control on icy streets.
13. If your wheels start to lock up, ease off your brake, and pump the brakes gently
14. If you begin to skid, take your foot off the excellerator, shift to neutral, and turn the wheel in the direction you are skidding.
Remember, during ice and now, take it slow!
