Memphis, TN

Over 1,000 excited children and their parents packed the Agri-Center Saturday, August 6 to attend the "Youth Weather Camp."
Sponsored by TV's Fox 13 and the National Weather Service in Memphis, this large scale gathering invited all interested youth to learn about weather, how it is predicted, how it is communicated to the public, and how to protect yourself from inclement weather.
Children were invited to become a TV "weather personality" by standing in front of large green screen, coached by one of Channel 13's meteorologists as they announced the days' weather. Photo opps were plentiful as entire families posed with Channel 13's Joey Sulipeck, Chief Meteorologist, Holly Hancock, Meteorologist, Brian Basham, Meteorologist, and Tom Dees, reporter.
The National Weather Service's booth was a favorite attraction as the audience watched in wonder as a small scale tornado was generated. Everyone was awed to touched the large yellow outdoor warning siren from the 1950's displayed by the Shelby County Office of Preparedness. And eyes were skyward as a long line formed outside where helium-filled green balloons were launched upward. Children entered a contest to see if their balloon rode the wind the farthest. The winner receiving tickets to the Delta Fair.
It was a fun-filled, educational event for all who attended.
