Homeland Security

This coming Saturday, September 11, 2010, our nation will recognize and observe a new way to honor and remember the victims of “9/11,” the worst terrorist attack on American soil.

President Barack Obama has signed into law the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act proclaiming September 11 as a “National Day of Service and Remembrance.” This is a day for reflection, service and kindness.

While this is not a mandated federal holiday, it is a day for all citizens to work within their own commnity to give of their time and talents through volunteer efforts and personal preparedness.

The Shelby County Office of Preparedness HLS / EMA, under the direction of Bob Nations, Jr., encourages citizens on this National Day of Service to take ownership of their community’s safety by being personally prepareded for all emergencies, including acts of terrorism. It is easy to get involved by joining one or more of the Shelby County Citizen Corps initiatives such as USAonWatch (neighborhood watch), taking the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training, and volunteering in the Medical Reserve Corps.

We can all honor the victims of 9/11 with service to our community. This September 11, let us all proclaim, “I Remember, I Serve!”
